Abstract

The integration of Qur’anic recitation into the Bersih Desa tradition in Sumberagung Village, Gandusari District, Blitar Regency, illustrates how the Qur’an is lived within a local social and cultural setting. This study examines the forms of Qur’anic recitation practiced in the tradition, the meanings attributed to them by community leaders and residents, the motivations underlying participation, and their perceived influence on community life. The study employed field research using a qualitative descriptive method and an ethnomethodological approach. Data were obtained through observation, interviews with village officials, religious and customary leaders, and community participants, as well as documentation. Data were analyzed through reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with interpretation informed by hermeneutical phenomenology and motivation theory. The findings show that the core recitations—Ayat al-Kursi, al-Baqarah 284–286, and al-Mu‘awwidhatain—are generally understood as collective prayer for protection, safety, and blessing. Community leaders additionally associate the practice with religious identity, respect for ancestors, character formation, social cohesion, and da‘wah, while residents emphasize faith, protection, inherited tradition, and brotherhood. The study also identifies three recitation modes: tartil, tadwir, and hadr, applied to different parts of the ritual. Participation is motivated mainly by intrinsic religious aspirations, including reward, inner tranquility, protection, and self-reflection, while the religious environment functions as an extrinsic stimulus. The practice is perceived to strengthen spirituality and social solidarity.
